New Delhi – Delhi’s BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said that bursting firecrackers during the Diwali celebrations on Monday night didn’t cause a major spike in the city’s air pollution.
He added that the air‑quality index (AQI) will rise a bit this winter, which is normal, but that the Recent Diwali fireworks did not worsen the situation.
“Some AAP leaders, like Saurabh Bharadwaj, are blaming the tiny rise in pollution on Diwali crackers to win Muslim voters,” Sachdeva said.
He accused AAP of “spreading confusion” and called their push for another ban on fireworks ill‑timed.
On Oct. 31, 2024 (the day after Diwali), Delhi’s AQI hit a record 396.
Today, the daily average is 356, Sachdeva noted.
He also mentioned farmers in Punjab who used to be hit hard by floods. After the waters receded, farmers cleared fields, and some turned to stubble burning.
“Between Oct. 11 and Oct. 19, 2025, Punjab recorded 309 major stubble‑burning incidents,” he said.
Sachdeva criticised the Arvind Kejriwal government for not helping farmers prevent stubble burning earlier and for now refusing to assist them in stopping the practice.
The BJP chief said the rise in pollution after Diwali actually began a few days after reports of Punjab’s stubble burning surfaced.
He also blamed past Congress and Delhi governments for not taking strong steps to improve air quality.
“Now that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s administration is tackling pollution properly, AAP’s misleading statements are making the situation worse,” he warned.
