Delhi air‑pollution levels rose after Diwali, but BJP leader Virendra Sachdeva says the spike was short‑lived and the fireworks did not worsen the situation significantly.
Sachdeva, the Delhi BJP president, told reporters that while the city’s air‑quality index (AQI) climbed after the festival, the increase was modest. “The AQI record‑high 396 on Oct. 31 was a one‑off. Today it sits at 356,” he said, noting that the rise is expected to stay mild this winter.
The BJP chief also accused Delhi’s rival party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), of trying to drum up support among Muslims by blaming Diwali crackers for pollution. “AAP leaders like Saurabh Bharadwaj keep saying we should ban the fireworks to please a section of voters,” Sachdeva said. “They’re spreading confusion while the real issue is the stubble burning in Punjab.”
In Punjab, farmers were hit by floods in 2023, but after the water receded they cleared fields that included burning stubble. The statistic revealed 309 major stubble‑burning events between Oct. 11 and Oct. 19, 2025. “The state government has not helped farmers prevent stubble burning or offered relief to flood victims,” the BJP president said.
According to Sachdeva, reports of Punjab’s stubble burning appeared just two or three days before Delhi’s pollution levels started spiking on Oct. 17. He accused both the previous Congress governments and the current Arvind Kejriwal government of Delhi of failing to act against pollution. “Now the current administration, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is working in a planned way to improve air quality. The AAP, known for misleading statements, is still trying to worsen the situation,” he added.
