Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the flood relief camps near Geeta Colony Flyover and the Old Iron Bridge on Tuesday to check the current situation of the Yamuna river. The water level was close to the danger mark, so she wanted to see how residents affected by flooding are doing.
She personally met families staying in relief camps, listened to their concerns, and promised all possible help. The Chief Minister reassured residents that the government is working around the clock to manage the flood situation and said there is no need to panic.
Rekha Gupta spent time in different flood-affected areas, talking with officials to get detailed updates. She instructed the relief teams to make sure that essential supplies like clean drinking water, food, medical aid, and safe shelter are available without interruption. Her top priority is the safety, health, and well-being of everyone in these areas.
She explained that the flood situation in Delhi is currently under control. The maximum water released from the Hathnikund Barrage is expected to flow downstream in the evening. The government had already prepared well in advance, including desilting the Yamuna river and city drains over the last six months, which has helped reduce flood risks.
All gates along the Yamuna are open, allowing water to flow freely downstream. Barricades on city drains have mostly been closed to manage the water flow better. Based on official data, the water levels are not expected to reach previous record heights. The Chief Minister also clarified that the water entering the floodplains is part of the river’s natural course, so there is no risk of flooding in outer Delhi areas.
Rekha Gupta assured that the Delhi government is continuously monitoring the situation and will keep providing updates every hour. Relief operations will stay active as long as the floodwaters remain. She emphasized that residents’ safety is the government’s top priority.
During the day, the Chief Minister also spoke on call with several other states’ leaders, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana. She expressed concern over the severe floods impacting these regions, which have caused widespread damage, displaced families, and disrupted roads and communication networks.
Rekha Gupta assured the leaders from these states of Delhi’s support and promised to assist them in these challenging times. The Delhi government remains committed to helping all affected regions and ensuring residents’ safety.
