Delhi leaders are stepping up efforts to keep the city clean and vibrant. On Tuesday, Delhi’s Home and Education Minister Ashish Sood joined a community cleanliness drive as part of the ongoing Sewa Pakhwada initiative. He highlighted how hundreds of volunteers turned out to help, focusing on spots that often get overlooked.

“This is our commitment,” Sood told reporters from . “Today, hundreds of our colleagues are voluntarily engaged in a cleanliness drive. We are cleaning the garbage under the flyover.” Sood himself got hands-on, picking up trash near Raja Garden to tackle the buildup under the structure.

At the same time, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called on residents to stop defacing public spaces. She urged everyone, especially politicians, to avoid writing on walls or pasting posters—particularly ones featuring her own picture. “Defacement will not be tolerated,” she said firmly.

Gupta joined a cleanliness and tree plantation event in Shalimar Bagh, also under Sewa Pakhwara. She noted a massive turnout for a ring road cleanup, with thousands of people pitching in. “Cleanliness drive is a continuous process,” she added. “We need to understand that this is our city and our nation. I can see that there are tobacco packs, water bottles, we throw away plates after a bhandara, and there are posters pasted everywhere. All of this is making our city dirty.”

Gupta also shared good news for festival-goers. Loudspeakers at events like Ramlila, Durga Puja, and other cultural-religious celebrations in Delhi can now run until midnight. This change aims to let Hindu festivals wrap up without strict time limits, matching practices in states like Gujarat where Dandiya nights go on late.

“I always noticed that our Hindu festivals face difficulties, because Ramlila or Durga Puja can never end at 10 pm,” Gupta explained to reporters. “When Dandiya can go on all night in Gujarat, when events can happen all night in other states, then why can’t the same be for the people of Delhi? So this time we’ve given permission to all Ramlilas, Durga Pujas, and cultural-religious festivals to continue until 12 am.”

These moves show Delhi’s push for a cleaner environment and smoother celebrations amid the Sewa Pakhwada focus on service and community action.
