Delhi’s health minister fired back at an opposition leader Tuesday after claims that hundreds of people got sick from eating buckwheat flour, a staple during the Navratri festival. The incident has sparked a heated debate over food adulteration in the national capital, with calls for a thorough probe into the contaminated Kuttu Atta.
It all started when Delhi Police got reports at Jahangirpuri station about folks feeling uneasy after munching on buckwheat flour. Doctors at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) Hospital confirmed that 150 to 200 patients from neighborhoods like Jahangirpuri, Mahendra Park, Samaypur, Bhalswa Dairy, Lal Bagh, and Swaroop Nagar rushed to the emergency ward complaining of vomiting. Some even showed up at a hospital in Burari.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj quickly jumped in, blasting the government on social media platform X. He posted that “hundreds of people fell ill after consuming adulterated kuttu ka atta in Delhi,” highlighting how even the pure fasting foods for Navratri are getting tainted. Bharadwaj took a jab at the ruling setup, saying authorities are too busy “playing dandiya” to tackle the growing food safety crisis.
But Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh wasn’t having it. He slammed Bharadwaj, urging him to explain what the AAP government achieved during its 11 years in power—besides, he said, forcing Delhi residents to “live in filth.” Singh stressed that teams are actively investigating the buckwheat flour contamination and warned against turning this health scare into political fodder. “Whatever has happened should be investigated… there should be no politics on this,” he added, noting it will take time to clean up the mess left behind.
As Navratri kicks off, this buckwheat flour adulteration case is raising alarms about food safety in Delhi. Officials promise updates as the probe continues, aiming to prevent more illnesses from spoiled Kuttu Atta and other festival favorites.
