Delhi’s State Election Commission is gearing up for a series of bypolls to fill 12 vacant municipal wards in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The vacancies arose after councillors elected in February’s assembly polls had to vacate their seats. The wards waiting for new representatives include Shalimar Bagh B, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Mundka, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dichauon Kala, Naraina, Sangam Vihar, Dakshin Puri, Greater Kailash and Vinod Nagar.
To set a fair schedule, the commission is reviewing key dates such as local festivals, exams, and logistics, while also keeping law and order in mind. It will use the assembly electoral rolls from the relevant constituencies, updated as of January 1, 2025, to register voters in these wards. Any later additions to the candidate lists will also be added to the official roll.
Returning Officers in each ward are now finalising polling station locations based on the voter lists shared by the Election Commission of India. They are asked to complete these plans by October 13, 2025. A public notice on the commission’s website invites suggestions or objections from voters.
To run the elections smoothly, the commission has already appointed district election officers, general observers, returning officers, and assistants from the Delhi government. Expenditure observers will also monitor spending. Training sessions for election staff and IT personnel will wrap up soon.
Accessibility is a priority. The Delhi Mobile App will let voters with disabilities or senior citizens (over 85) request wheelchairs, special assistance, or transport services. A new Single‑Window Permission Portal will simplify all necessary approvals and handle complaints.
Ahead of the polls, the commission held meetings with senior government officials, autonomous bodies and the police commissioner to confirm security and logistics plans. A brief with the Chief Secretary is scheduled to ensure all arrangements are in place. The Delhi State Election Commission is working to organise the bypolls quickly, aiming to restore full representation for the community’s municipal wards.
