Delhi Police’s Cyber Cell has taken a 25‑year‑old man into custody after he allegedly siphoned Rs 26.32 lakh from his 68‑year‑old father’s bank account over four months. The case shows how family disputes can turn into cyber‑enabled fraud.
The accused, Shivam Sharma, is a B.A. graduate who formerly worked for a BPO. He was arrested on October 25 after Inspector Subhash Chandra and his team, led by ACP Anil Sharma, finished a thorough investigation. Police recovered 100 grams of gold and froze Rs 3 lakh in an HDFC Bank account linked to the fraud.
The victim, a former parking operator at Azadpur Mandi, had limited digital literacy and left his bank affairs to his stepson. On March 23, while his father attended his first wife’s last rites, Shivam stole the SIM card that linked the account. He then forged a UPI ID, bought gold coins on Amazon and Flipkart, and hid them in a wall‑mounted cupboard.
Cash was also laundered. About Rs 6 lakh was moved through operators at cyber cafés, where Shivam offered commissions of up to 10 percent. To erase evidence, he destroyed the SIM card and his mobile phone. Astonishingly, he even helped his father file a cyber‑crime complaint, posing as if he knew nothing about the theft.
When questioned, Shivam initially denied the allegations but later admitted to the crimes, which helped authorities recover the stolen gold and funds. Police say his motive stemmed from deep‑rooted family resentment. He is the son of his father’s second marriage and felt sidelined when the family parking business was handed over to his father’s elder son from the first marriage.
“This case highlights the growing link between family disputes and cyber‑enabled financial crimes,” the police said. Investigations are still ongoing.
The arrest underscores the importance of securing digital accounts, especially for older people who may be less tech‑savvy. Delhi Police’s Cyber Cell continues to monitor similar threats that could jeopardise individuals and families alike.
