New Delhi’s National Zoological Park will welcome visitors again this Saturday after a two‑month closure caused by an avian influenza outbreak in the water‑bird aviary.
The zoo, which sits on 176 acres in the heart of Delhi, announced that all official safety and preventive plans are in place as it opens its gates. According to the zoo’s spokesperson, visitors can expect the same comfortable, open‑air layout that lets animals roam in natural‑looking enclosures while guests have clear views from all angles.
The zoo was shut down on August 30 last year after a positive avian influenza test at the water‑bird aviary. Since then, Delhi authorities followed every guideline in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying’s 2021 “Action Plan for Preparation, Control and Containment of Avian Influenza.” Samples were tested every 15 days, four times in total, and the final tests from the originally positive case turned out negative, according to the National Institute of High‑Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal.
Visitors should keep in mind the zoo’s standard bio‑security measures. The park houses about 1,350 animals across 130 species—including Royal Bengal tigers, Asiatic lions, Indian rhinoceroses, elephants, jaguars, and the local brow‑antlered deer (Sangai). The layout, designed by Carl Hagenbeck, features large enclosed areas with moats and dense vegetation that mimic each animal’s natural habitat.
The park is also known for its accessibility options. Wheelchair‑friendly walking paths, free wheelchairs for people with physical challenges, and a trolley service help guests move around the extensive grounds with ease. In addition, the zoo offers guided tours, workshops, and a library to educate visitors on wildlife conservation and protection.
With the reopening, Delhi Zoo is poised to draw both locals and tourists eager to see classic Indian wildlife and enjoy an urban green space that blends education with entertainment.
