Kolkata’s Durga Puja celebrations are buzzing with energy, even as rain tries to dampen the fun. On Friday, crowds poured into pandals across the city and other parts of West Bengal, embracing the religious festivities despite the wet weather.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of scattered light to moderate rain hitting Kolkata and nearby areas on Saturday. A deep depression is heading inland from the coasts of South Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, keeping showers active through Sunday night. Scattered rain could pop up again on September 29, but things might ease up by September 30—Asthami day—with lower chances of downpours in the city.
That’s not the end of the worry, though. Starting Wednesday night, a new cyclonic circulation could brew over the Andaman Sea on September 30. This might spin up a low-pressure area in the central and northern Bay of Bengal by Navami on October 1, bringing rain to several West Bengal districts from that night onward.
“The second system will keep the rain going right through October 2—Dashami, the final day of Durga Puja,” said an official from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore. “Expect some rain throughout the festival this year.”
For today, heavy rain is on the cards for South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Bankura, and Jhargram districts. Kolkata could see moderate showers mixed with thundershowers, and scattered rain might linger into Sunday. If that low-pressure system drifts toward Bengal, the rains could ramp up even more from Navami.
North Bengal isn’t escaping the wet spell either. Scattered heavy rain is forecast for Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar today. Districts like Darjeeling and Kalimpong face ongoing thunder and lightning with rain through Sunday. Malda and North Dinajpur could get hit with showers and storms on September 29, and rains might pick up across north Bengal from Navami night into Dashami.
Devotees are pushing through the weather, but organizers and visitors in Kolkata and West Bengal should keep an eye on these Durga Puja rain forecasts to stay safe during the festivities.
