Thousands of devotees flocked to Rameswaram in southern Tamil Nadu on Sunday for Mahalaya Amavasya, turning the sacred shores into a vibrant scene of faith and rituals. This key Hindu festival, observed during the Tamil month of Purattasi, marks the end of pitru paksha—a 15-day period dedicated to honoring ancestors—and draws crowds seeking spiritual peace for their departed loved ones.

From dawn, men, women, and children streamed to Agni Theertham, the holy sea next to the famous Ramanathaswamy temple. They carried puja items and offerings, ready for the day’s traditions. First up: a purifying dip in the ocean waters. Devotees believe this bath washes away sins and brings comfort to ancestral souls.

After the plunge, families gathered for tarpanam, the heartfelt ancestral rites. They offered sesame seeds, water, and prayers to uplift their forefathers’ spirits. The energy built as pilgrims headed inside the Ramanathaswamy temple complex to visit its 22 sacred wells. Each well holds its own spiritual story, and bathing in them is a must-do for Mahalaya Amavasya. Completing these steps, many say, unlocks blessings and liberation for both the living and the dead.

The day peaked with visits to the temple’s main sanctum, home to Lord Ramanathaswamy and Goddess Parvathavardhini. Priests led special pujas, chanting prayers to shower divine grace on families. Temple halls buzzed with devotees’ voices, clanging bells, and swirling incense, creating an electric atmosphere of devotion.

Mahalaya Amavasya carries extra weight in Hindu traditions—rituals here pack more merit than on other new moon days. It’s a prime time to ask for forgiveness, show gratitude, and pay respects to one’s roots. Pilgrims shared how these acts not only soothe ancestors but also invite prosperity and good fortune into their lives. Rameswaram truly became a hotspot of spiritual excitement, blending sea rituals, temple baths, and family tributes into one unforgettable observance.
