Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called the alleged gang‑rape in Durgapur “despicable” and urged West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to push for a thorough investigation and swift punishment. The case involves an Odisha medical student who was said to have been taken from her hostel by a classmate and then attacked by two or three men.
Police in West Bengal have already arrested three suspects in connection with the incident. The students were attacked overnight, and the victim’s father reported that the attack happened while she was going to get food. He said the attacker left her alone when the other men arrived, and they assaulted her. The girl is receiving medical care and, according to officials, is in stable condition.
Deputy Magistrate Ranjana Roy, who met the victim, confirmed that she is being supported by the authorities and that the case will be followed up. Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also condemned the crime, calling it “highly condemnable and painful.” In a post on X, he urged Banerjee to take exemplary action and promised state support for the victim’s family.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from multiple political leaders, who are demanding a fair investigation and strict penalties for the attackers. As the case continues, West Bengal police and state officials are working to ensure that justice is served for the student and to prevent such crimes in the future.
