A top BJP leader has thrown his weight behind the Uttar Pradesh government’s bold move to stamp out caste-based politics, calling it a key step toward keeping India united and on track for growth.

Rohan Gupta, the party’s national spokesperson, spoke out on Tuesday in Lucknow, right after the state cracked down on rallies, vehicle stickers, and signboards that push caste agendas. This follows a September 16 ruling from the Allahabad High Court, which aims to end caste discrimination and stop the glorification of caste in public life.

“I don’t think it’s right to divide the people of this country in any way,” Gupta told . He slammed politicians who split voters along religious or caste lines, engage in appeasement for votes, or spread fear to grab power. “Those tactics are dangerous for the nation,” he added.

Gupta highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on development for all, urging everyone to ditch divisive politics. “India must follow ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’—together with everyone, development for everyone,” he said. “People see through vote-bank tricks, and they’ll keep backing PM Modi’s vision.”

Under Modi’s leadership, Gupta said, India’s 1.4 billion people are uniting for fast progress and aiming to become a developed nation by 2047.

The Uttar Pradesh order, issued to follow the court’s decision in the Praveen Chetri vs State of UP case, bans police from noting caste in reports. Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar’s circular tells departments to drop caste mentions from First Information Reports (FIRs), arrest memos, and other documents. Instead, they’ll use parents’ names to identify people.

Cops must now scrub caste symbols, slogans, and signs from police stations, noticeboards, vehicles, and public spots. Vehicle owners flashing caste stickers face fines under the Motor Vehicles Act. The state has also outlawed caste-based rallies and events meant to stir politics, while tasking police to watch social media for posts that boost caste pride or hate.

Officials plan to remove caste-labeled signboards from towns and villages too, all to build national unity and curb discrimination.
