At a press conference in New Delhi on Friday, the Congress party blasted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Congress leaders called for the two groups to be banned from educational institutions for spreading what they called “divisive ideology.”
The Deccan-based Congress, which is currently in opposition to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), used the platform to rally students and teachers who criticize the BJP‑led government’s ties with RSS-affiliated groups.
High‑profile accusations
All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) president Varun Choudhary led the accusations. Lamba slammed BJP officials for protecting ABVP activists, who were filmed filming female students inside Government College in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, while the girls were changing clothes. She said this “is shameful” and vowed that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh will not let the activists escape unpunished.
Lamba also referenced a sexual‑harassment report at the South Asian University in Delhi. She urged the Home Minister and Delhi Chief Minister to take action against the alleged perpetrators.
Calls for a ban
Choudhary demanded that both RSS and ABVP be banned in schools and colleges. He highlighted an incident in which a Delhi University professor was slapped by ABVP leader Deepika Jha, a DUSU joint secretary, and called for her expulsion from the university.
“We are seeing a pattern of harassment and intimidation against NSUI activists in BJP‑ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh,” Choudhary added. He also cited a case in Kerala where an IT professional committed suicide after revealing repeated sexual assault and exploitation at RSS shakhas (training camps).
The Congress party’s message is clear: without a change in how RSS and its student wing operate in academic settings, student safety and freedom of thought remain at risk.
