Tamil Nadu’s political heat‑up just got warmer.
BJP leader Nainar Nagenthran blasted Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday for trying to stall the Election Commission’s plan to clean up the state’s voter list.
Nagenthran says Stalin is looking for excuses to protect his party from an upcoming electoral loss. He recalled that in 2017, it was the DMK that asked the Madras High Court to revise the R.K. Nagar voter rolls because of “bogus voters.” Now, Stalin is challenging the same process on the Election Commission’s new Special Intensive Revision (SIR) order.
“Every time the Election Commission drafts a revision, Stalin loudly objects,” Nagenthran said. “Remember, the DMK itself pushed the 2017 revision. Does he not remember that?”
The BJP’s president also slammed Stalin’s claim that the Election Commission was acting on BJP orders. He noted that since Jawaharlal Nehru’s era, many election‑roll revisions have been done under Congress‑run governments. “This is just routine administration,” Nagenthran warned.
Nagenthran rejects the DMK’s claim that the SIR could unfairly delete voters. He pointed out that all officials involved – from the Chief Electoral Officer to local revenue and village officers – are government employees, not party members. “If Stalin thinks the process is abused, is he saying our civil servants are corrupt?” he asked.
The BJP leader accused the ruling party of turning a legitimate check against illegal voting into politics. According to Nagenthran, the revision aims to stop infiltrators, including Bangladeshis who might have entered Tamil Nadu, from registering as voters. It is not about wiping out genuine citizens.
He also warned that the DMK’s focus on the voter roll thriller is a distraction from real governance problems. “The government has failed on floods, roads, crops, water, and corrupt school fees. The people see through these lies – the DMK’s defeat is certain,” Nagenthran said.
The controversy over the SIR and allegations of political bias over the voter list has placed Tamil Nadu’s elections in the spotlight just before the next state polls.
