In Kochi, V.D. Satheesan, the opposition leader in the Kerala Assembly, urged the Vijayan government not to become a tool for those who want to spark communal anger. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he said officials in charge must act fast to keep sensitive issues from turning into larger conflicts.
Satheesan pointed to the hijab debate at Palluruthy St. Rita’s Public School as an example of how quick action can calm tensions. An eighth‑grade student had been denied entry to class because she wore a hijab, a rule that the school had to interpret carefully. The matter was resolved within the community by MP Hibi Eden, Ernakulam District Congress Committee chairman Mohammed Shiyas, and other local leaders. “The problem ended there, it shouldn’t be used to fuel a fire elsewhere,” the leader said.
He added that several parties have tried to turn such incidents into flashpoints, but the opposition has stayed clear and responsible. He referenced a recent court decision that clarified a long‑standing Waqf land dispute, showing earlier claims were baseless. “The government must act immediately to stop sensitive incidents from being exploited for communal purposes,” Satheesan warned. “And the media must not blow small matters for the sake of sensationalism.”
While the government has a key role to play, Satheesan said the opposition is responsible for keeping the peace. “We take a calm, conciliatory approach, and we encourage swift action to keep communal tensions at bay,” he said. The call came as Kerala faces a growing need for social harmony, especially after recent controversies linked to school policy and community land use.
