In Tripura, security forces just pulled off a big win against drug smugglers. The Assam Rifles seized a massive haul of methamphetamine tablets—known as Yaba—worth more than Rs 60 crore in the Mohanpur border area of West Tripura district.
Troops acted fast on solid tips and stopped the shipment cold. Smugglers had timed it for the Durga Puja festivities, hoping to sneak the highly addictive drugs into the state without a hitch. In the end, they grabbed 60.77 kg of the banned substance, keeping it out of the hands of local networks.
A defense spokesperson praised the team’s quick thinking and sharp intel, calling it a key move to protect Northeast India’s youth from the drug threat. “The Sentinels of the North East” are staying vigilant, especially during celebrations like Durga Puja.
These Yaba tablets came from Myanmar, routed through Mizoram and Assam, with Bangladesh as the final destination. Tripura shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh on three sides, leaving it exposed to smuggling, illegal trade, and cross-border crimes. While most of the frontier is fenced to block infiltrators and traffickers, challenges remain.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha shared more details on the state’s drug crackdown. Over the last three financial years (2022-23 to 2024-25), agencies arrested 248 people for illegal drug use and nabbed 2,729 peddlers. They’re now hunting 28 more suspects who are on the run.
Saha, who oversees the Home Department, noted conviction rates under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act: 11.7% in 2022 and 2023, dropping to 5% in 2024. Courts have ordered the destruction of seized drugs, which special committees burn at designated spots to keep them off the streets.
