In Tripura, India’s Assam Rifles just pulled off a big win against drug smugglers. Troops seized 60.77 kilograms of banned methamphetamine tablets—known as Yaba—worth over Rs 60 crore in a swift operation near the Mohanpur border areas in West Tripura district.
Acting on solid tips, the forces moved fast to stop the peddlers. The smugglers tried to sneak the highly addictive drugs into the state by blending in with the lively Durga Puja celebrations. But the quick action shut down their plan, keeping the narcotics from hitting local networks and protecting young people during the festival.
A defense spokesperson highlighted how sharp intelligence and fast teamwork made this drug bust possible. It’s another strong show from the “Sentinels of the North East,” who keep fighting the illegal drug trade in the region.
Police officials revealed the drugs came from Myanmar, routed through Mizoram and Assam, with Bangladesh as the final stop. Tripura shares a long 856-kilometer border with Bangladesh on three sides, which makes it a hotspot for cross-border smuggling, crimes, and illegal movements. While most of the frontier is now fenced to block such threats, challenges remain in a few spots.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha shared more on the state’s crackdown on narcotics. In the last three financial years (2022-23 to 2024-25), law enforcement arrested 248 people for illegal drug use and nabbed 2,729 drug peddlers. They’re still hunting for 28 more suspects on the run. Saha, who oversees the Home Department, noted conviction rates under the NDPS Act: 11.7% in 2022 and 2023, dropping to 5% in 2024.
Once courts give the go-ahead, special committees destroy the seized drugs by burning them at designated sites, ensuring they can’t harm anyone. This ongoing effort shows Tripura’s push to tackle the drug menace head-on.
