Delhi University has suspended Professor Rasal Singh, the principal of Ramanujan College, after a faculty member accused him of harassment and hostile behavior. Officials confirmed the move on Monday, saying the suspension came last week based on a complaint filed back in March.
A governing body panel and a fact-finding committee looked into the issue before deciding on the suspension. Singh remains on leave while the probe continues.
Singh, however, fights back. In a grievance he sent to the Prime Minister’s Office on September 13, he called the complaint “false and retaliatory.” He links it to a promotion case that got turned down and points out the suspicious timing—filed months after the promotion denial.
He also flags major procedural slip-ups. Under University Grants Commission (UGC) rules and the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) guidelines, the complaint should have gone straight to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). But more than six months later, that hasn’t happened. Instead, Singh claims he’s under “undue political pressure” to quit or face suspension.
With a strong track record, Singh previously worked as Dean of Students Welfare and Dean of Languages at the Central University of Jammu. At Ramanujan College, he helped boost its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) position from 65 to 37. As a first-generation academic from a rural background, he says this “unfounded allegation” has wrecked his reputation and caused deep personal pain.
The Delhi University suspension highlights ongoing concerns about workplace harassment in Indian colleges, especially with PoSH compliance issues.
