Durgapur, West Bengal – a second‑year medical student from a private college in the city has reportedly been gang‑raped, police say. The victim, a resident of Jaleswar in Odisha, was last seen in the campus hospital where doctors are now conducting a medical examination. Police are treating the case as a serious crime and have begun an investigation.
Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, condemned the assault as “highly condemnable and painful.” In a tweet on X, he urged West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take swift and decisive action against whoever is responsible, “in accordance with the law.” Majhi also pledged that the Odisha government would provide all possible assistance to the victim’s family.
The story has sparked outrage beyond the campus. The father of a doctor who was murdered in a similar incident at RG Kar Medical College in North 24 Parganas has called for a tougher response from the West Bengal administration. He criticized the state’s failure to protect medical staff and questioned the NCRB’s report that places Kolkata as the safest city in India. “We must hold the government responsible,” he said, calling for officials who cannot keep patients and teachers safe to step down.
The investigation continues, and authorities promise a thorough probe. As more details emerge, the incident remains a stark reminder of the need for better safety measures for students and doctors in West Bengal.
