Delhi University Students’ Union Election Sees High Turnout Amid Violence and Rigging Claims
In a lively but tense day for Delhi University students, over 1.55 lakh students cast their votes in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections on Thursday. The event grabbed headlines due to reports of violence and rigging allegations between rival groups ABVP and NSUI. Both sides are confidently claiming victory, but the official DUSU election results will roll out on Friday.
Voting kicked off in two shifts to keep things smooth across the university’s 52 centres. The morning session started slow at 8:30 a.m. but gained speed at various polling stations and departments, wrapping up by 1 p.m. In the evening, polls ran from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at eight key colleges. The overall voter turnout hit an impressive 39.45 per cent, with 195 booths using 711 EVMs to handle the process.
Out of more than 2.75 lakh eligible voters from over 50 Delhi University colleges, this turnout shows strong student engagement in the DUSU polls. For the top spot of DUSU President, nine candidates are competing, while 12 others are vying for Vice President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary posts.
The day wasn’t without drama. ABVP, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), pointed fingers at current DUSU President and NSUI leader Raunak Khatri. They accused his supporters of a scuffle near North Campus that injured a female student outside Kirori Mal College. ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma shared, "Khatri’s group manhandled the student, causing her to fall and get hurt."
Despite the chaos, ABVP is upbeat, predicting a clean sweep of all four DUSU posts. Sharma dismissed NSUI’s rigging complaints as panic tactics, joking, "Just like Congress blames EVMs after every loss, NSUI is doing the same." ABVP National General Secretary Virendra Solanki echoed this, saying NSUI is scrambling for third place and throwing around "baseless allegations."
NSUI isn’t backing down. They’ve demanded the cancellation of ABVP’s presidential candidate’s nomination, citing vote manipulation and malpractice at colleges like Kirori Mal, Hindu, and Hansraj. NSUI National President Varun Chaudhary slammed the incidents as an attack on democracy, declaring, "We won’t tolerate these undemocratic moves. Students will vote against ABVP’s dishonesty."
As Delhi University buzzes with anticipation, all eyes are on Friday’s DUSU election results. This clash highlights the high stakes in student politics, where passion often meets controversy.
