Mild Earthquake Hits Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh Amid Ongoing Flood Woes
A mild earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 struck Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand on Friday afternoon, shaking things up just as the region battles heavy rains and flash floods. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the quake hit at 4:22 PM IST, with its epicenter at latitude 30.03 N and longitude 80.69 E. The tremors originated just 10 km below the Earth’s surface, but no immediate damage or injuries have been reported so far. Officials are monitoring the situation closely, and more details on the earthquake in Pithoragarh are expected soon.
This seismic event comes hot on the heels of relentless rainfall and flash floods that have battered Uttarakhand for days. The state has seen widespread disruption, with roads washed out and villages cut off. Just a day earlier, on September 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew over the flood-hit areas in an aerial survey to gauge the damage firsthand.
In a big relief move, PM Modi announced Rs 1,200 crore in financial aid for Uttarakhand during a meeting in Dehradun on Thursday. He reviewed the state’s relief efforts and pushed for a all-around recovery plan to help people get back on their feet. "We need a multi-dimensional approach to support the entire region," the Prime Minister stressed.
The aid package covers key areas like rebuilding homes through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), fixing national highways, reconstructing schools, and providing quick relief via the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Farmers and herders will also get mini kits for livestock to restart their work. Under PMAY-Gramin, eligible rural families with flood-damaged houses will receive special funding from a project submitted by the Uttarakhand government.
The central government has already dispatched inter-ministerial teams to assess the full extent of the flood damage. Based on their reports, more assistance will follow. PM Modi also shared his heartfelt condolences with families who lost loved ones in these natural disasters. He assured that the Union Government stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Uttarakhand, ready to offer every bit of support needed during this tough time.
As Uttarakhand grapples with earthquakes, floods, and heavy rains, residents are urged to stay alert and follow local advisories for safety. Keep an eye on updates from NCS and disaster management authorities for the latest on this developing story.
