New Delhi, Oct 24 – In a bid to keep the Bihar Assembly election fair, the Election Commission of India (ECI) told candidates and parties to label any AI‑generated or edited videos and images so voters know what they’re seeing.
The ECI’s directive says that any synthetic photos, audio clips, or videos used for campaigning must carry a clear, legible label – phrases like “AI‑Generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content.” The label must cover at least 10 % of the visible area in a video and stay on the screen’s top hand. It should also show the name of the creator in the caption or metadata.
Why? Deep fakes can mislead voters by changing the look, voice or message of a politician. The commission warned that any content that misrepresents a person’s identity without consent, or spreads misinformation, must be removed within three hours of being reported.
The ruling party’s order also reminds all parties of their responsibilities under India’s IT Rules of 2021. Those rules call for strict compliance, ensuring political advertising is transparent and that there’s no unlawful or misleading content on social media.
Earlier this month, the ECI announced a paid holiday for workforce voters on the two polling days—November 6 and 11. Employers who cut wages for staff who miss those days face a penalty.
The Bihar Assembly election will decide a new 243‑seat legislature. Results are expected on November 14.
