ECI furthering BJP’s ‘vote chori’ agenda, says Venugopal on SIR exercise

Congress officials in New Delhi on Tuesday blasted the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Review—known as the SIR—as a tool that the BJP is using to shuffle voter rolls for its own benefit.

General Secretary K.C. Venugopal called the SIR a “vote‑chori” scheme that lets the Commission ignore its duty of impartiality. “The ECI’s current conduct favors the BJP and undermines the Constitution,” he said on X, warning that the party must fight any attempts to add bogus names or delete legitimate voters.

Earlier that day, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge convened a strategy review with senior party leaders. The meeting, attended by AICC general secretaries, state in‑charges, party presidents and local leaders from 12 states where the SIR is underway, aimed to coordinate Congress’s response.

“Updating electoral rolls is necessary, but it must be done honestly,” Venugopal stressed. “We will stand against every move that threatens democracy, whether big or small.”

The call comes after Congress suffered a heavy defeat in the recent Bihar assembly elections, winning only six seats. The party now faces internal pressure to show that it can protect the integrity of the vote while challenging the BJP’s alleged manipulation of the SIR process.
