Election Commission Hosts Workshop to Fight Fake News and Boost Election Info
New Delhi got a big push on election transparency today as the Election Commission of India (ECI) kicked off a one-day workshop for media and communication teams from across the country. The event zeroed in on tackling misinformation and spreading accurate facts about elections, helping keep voters in the loop.
Held at the bustling Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, the workshop drew 51 key players—Media Nodal Officers (MNOs) and Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs)—from the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all 28 states and 8 Union Territories. It’s all part of ECI’s drive to make sure election news stays real in an age of fake stories flooding social media.
The big names showed up too: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, opened the session with some straight talk. They highlighted how fake narratives are a real headache these days, but reminded everyone that India’s elections follow the Constitution to the letter. "We must keep pushing back against misinformation with solid facts," the ECI stressed in its update, urging teams to communicate this clearly.
The day’s sessions packed a punch, focusing on building stronger communication setups in CEO offices. Attendees learned how to share timely and accurate info with media outlets and stakeholders, making sure the public gets the truth fast. A major highlight? Discussions on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls, with tips on engaging voters through media and social platforms.
To get hands-on, experts ran a session on smart strategies to fight misinformation, especially online. From spotting deepfakes to crafting quick responses, these tools will help officers stay ahead of digital tricks.
This isn’t the first time—it’s the third workshop this year for ECI and CEO media teams. Earlier ones happened at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi on April 9 and June 5. The goal? Create a tight-knit network of communication pros who can build trust in the electoral process. In a world where info spreads like wildfire, this means more reliable election updates for voters everywhere, strengthening India’s democracy one fact at a time.
