The Election Commission of India (ECI) is gearing up for Bihar’s next Assembly elections, holding a two‑day visit to the state to check that everything is ready for a fair vote. Headed by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the commission met Patna’s enforcement heads—IGs, DIGs, SSPs, DEOs, and SPs—to review everything from polling station set‑up to fake‑news monitoring on social media.
What the ECI Did
- On Monday, the ECI went through every step of election planning: EVM management, logistics, training of staff, voter awareness drives, and security measures.
- The commission asked all DEOs and SPs to keep an eye on fake news online and be ready to act legally if needed.
- They also set up a system to spot and help “parda‑nasheen” voters—women who dress in burqas—so they can cast their ballots safely.
Party Input
The commission spoke with representatives of every major party in Bihar, including the Aam Aadmi Party, BJP, RJD, Congress, CPI‑ML, and others. Most parties wanted the polls after the Chhath festival to get the highest turnout.
- JD(U) leader Umesh Singh Kushwaha pushed for a single‑phase election right after Chhath to let people outside the state vote.
- BJP chief Dilip Jaiswal asked for paramilitary support in backward areas to make voters feel secure.
Final Electoral Roll and Numbers
- The final electoral roll, released on September 30, lists 7.42 crore voters—down from 7.89 crore earlier in the year.
- In the 243‑seat assembly, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds 131 seats (BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM S 4, 2 independents).
- The opposition Mahagathbandhan has 111 seats (RJD 77, Congress 19, CPI‑ML 11, CPI(M) 2, CPI 2).
What’s Next
The ECI will soon confirm the polling dates. Polls are expected in either one or two phases, with many parties leaning toward a single phase after Chhath. Political activity is heating up as the state prepares for a showdown between the NDA and Mahagathbandhan in a battle that could shape Bihar’s future.
