In Chandigarh, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Hooda blasted the Election Commission on Friday, saying the body failed to act fairly after the BJP won the state’s elections. He claimed the win was secured by “vote theft.”
Hooda, a top Congress leader, pointed to a series of irregularities that he and Congress say were highlighted by Rahul Gandhi. “The voter list is full of mistakes,” Hooda told reporters. He gave examples: a single woman’s name appeared 223 times at one polling station, and the system listed 122,000 fake photographs of voters.
He said that after Rahul Gandhi’s revelations, a media investigation confirmed the claims. “They registered votes for 501 people on a three‑cottage house owned by a BJP leader, even though only seven people live there,” Hooda explained. “The photographs and voter rolls let people sign up in two states – both Uttar Pradesh and Haryana – and they tend to support the BJP.”
The irregularities have sparked doubts about the Election Commission’s trustworthiness. “Our confidence in the system has shattered,” Hooda said. “That’s why the Congress will take all steps to protect democracy.”
Hooda added that after the October 5, 2024 polls, the Election Commission first reported a voter turnout of 61.19 %. The next day it rose to 65.65 %, and a day later it jumped again to 65.9 %. “How did the turnout figures increase automatically for three days straight?” Hooda asked. He criticized the long wait for EVM results, “When the results should be out in seconds, they took forever.”
Hooda insisted that Congress had already won 73 seats in the postal ballot count, but that count dropped to 37 once the EVM results came in. “All the past five elections show the party that wins the postal tally becomes the ruling party,” he said.
Hooda said the campaign is now a national one. “The Congress is fighting for our Constitution and democracy,” he added. He promised protests across the state to counter what he describes as vote theft, and said the party is working on a blueprint for the action.
As Haryana moves forward, many voters and observers are watching the dispute closely to see whether the Election Commission can finally prove it works fairly for all citizens.
