New Delhi – The Election Commission of India (ECI) will reveal the timetable for Bihar’s Assembly polls in a press briefing on Monday at 4 p.m. Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar told reporters in Patna that the state’s elections must be finished before November 22, when the current assembly’s term ends.
Bihar’s 243 seats include two reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 38 for Scheduled Castes. The commission has been busy preparing for a smooth voting process. Booth‑level officers, who work directly at polling stations, now carry identity cards so voters can easily recognise them. They can also leave mobile phones in a secure room outside the booth. In addition, every polling place will be live‑streamed online, giving voters full transparency.
To boost voter confidence, the ECI has updated the design of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot papers. Candidate photographs will now appear in full colour and cover about three‑quarters of the photo area, making it easier to spot the right face. Candidate names and NOTA options will show in bold, 30‑point Indian numerals. These upgraded ballot papers will first be used in Bihar’s upcoming assembly elections.
The big political showdown in the 243‑seat Bihar Assembly pits the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, against the Mahagathbandhan coalition headed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Currently, the NDA holds 131 seats – BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM(S) 4 and two independents – while the Mahagathbandhan has 111 seats: RJD 77, Congress 19, CPI(ML) 11, CPI(M) 2 and CPI 2. Campaigning has intensified across the state as parties trade accusations and pressure voters ahead of this high‑stakes election.
The ECI’s preparations, combined with the clear timetable and modern voting tools, aim to deliver a fair and transparent electoral process for all Bihari voters.
