In Chennai, the AIADMK’s general secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami, told reporters that the Telangana Assembly has been treating opposition parties differently from the ruling DMK. He said the Karur tragedy, which left 41 people dead, shows what he calls the government’s “gross negligence” and “political bias”.
Outside the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, EPS said AIADMK members were not allowed to speak about the Karur disaster in the house. “We tried to raise the incident, but we were denied the floor,” he said. “Had proper safety measures been in place, we could have saved many lives.”
Palaniswami slammed the administration for using “two systems of justice”: one rule for those in power and another for anyone standing on the opposition side. He pointed to a public meeting at Veluchampuram, saying the lack of adequate security let the crowd grow too large, contributing to the incident. The 41‑person death toll has been a major point of contention between the parties.
He also highlighted discrepancies in the official police deployment figures. “The police said 500 officers were there, but the Chief Minister later claimed 660 men were on duty,” the leader of opposition said. “Televised footage shows we did not even see 500 officers at the venue.” This contradiction has raised doubts among the public and EPS about the real number of officers guarding the event.
Moving to the bigger question of land distribution, EPS asked why the government allocated land—previously denied to the AIADMK—to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). He accused the ruling party of giving the land for political reasons and of forming a one‑man commission to hide the truth. “The commission’s work is secretive and it does not cooperate,” he added.
During the public meeting, EPS noted that a speech by a TVK leader was cut short after only ten minutes and even a shoe fell on the stage. “If we speak in the Assembly, we’re thrown out. That’s why I’m talking to people through the media,” he said.
Despite accusations that he was playing politics over Karur, Palaniswami insisted that he only speaks for the people. “Why is the ruling party so nervous whenever Karur comes up?” he asked. The debate over accountability and safety measures around the Karur tragedy continues to loom large in Tamil Nadu politics.
