A tragic accident at the Ennore Thermal Power Station construction site in Tamil Nadu has claimed the lives of nine migrant workers from Assam. The incident happened Tuesday when a massive steel arch suddenly collapsed near Chennai, crushing the workers who were building an extension for the North Chennai Thermal Power Station.
One worker at the site, speaking to reporters, described the horrifying moment. “I’m new here and don’t know the exact name of that part,” he said. “But it was the middle connection. There was a loud noise, and that section just gave way. Everything else came crashing down after that.”
The victims were all from Assam, with four hailing from Karbi Anglong district and five from Hojai district. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the sad news on social media platform X, confirming the deaths and vowing quick action. “We’re working closely with Tamil Nadu authorities to bring the bodies back home as soon as possible,” he wrote. He listed the names of those who died: Munna Kemprai, Sorbojit Thausen, Phaibit Fanglu, Bidayum Porbosa, Paban Sorong, Prayanto Sorong, Suman Kharikap, Dimaraj Thousen, and Dipak Raijung. Sarma offered his deepest condolences to their families and loved ones.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin responded swiftly, announcing ₹10 lakh in compensation for each victim’s family. In a post on X, he expressed his heartbreak over the Ennore power plant collapse. “I’m deeply saddened by the loss of these nine workers from Assam during the BHEL construction project,” Stalin said. He also directed officials to handle the transport of the bodies back to Assam and ordered immediate relief efforts at the site.
Stalin instructed the state’s electricity minister, Thangam Thennarasu, and TANGEDCO Chairman K. Venkatachalam to visit the Ennore Thermal Power construction site right away and oversee rescue and support operations.
TANGEDCO Chairman J. Radhakrishnan told reporters that the workers came from Assam and nearby regions. He noted one person remains injured, and officials from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) are on the scene helping with the response. Police say they’re still investigating what caused the steel arch to fail in this Tamil Nadu construction accident, with a full probe underway to uncover the details.
