Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Dehradun: Yogi Adityanath Announces Aid for Victims
Dehradun in Uttarakhand turned into a nightmare on Tuesday as heavy rains triggered flooding and landslides, claiming three lives in the Sahastradhara area. The downpour caused houses to collapse and buried people under debris near the Tons River, leaving families devastated.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath quickly stepped in with heartfelt condolences. In a post on X, he called the tragedy "extremely heartbreaking" and shared his sympathies with the grieving families. Yogi announced Rs 2 lakh in financial aid for the kin of UP residents who lost their lives. He also directed officials to ensure the bodies are brought back home with respect. "I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed souls find peace and the injured recover soon," he added.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police swung into action right away. They rushed to the spot in Sahastradhara’s Malnigad and Majad villages to search for survivors. NDRF Assistant Commandant Ajay Pant described the scene: "Cloudbursts made everything worse. Houses and properties are badly damaged, and three people got trapped under debris. We had to pause the search because more water and rubble kept coming from the hills."
The heavy rainfall didn’t stop there. In Dehradun’s Paunda area, over 200 students at Devbhoomi Institute got stuck as the campus flooded overnight. SDRF teams bravely rescued all of them, pulling everyone to safety.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wasted no time. He visited the worst-hit spots like Sahastradhara, Raipur, Kesarwala, and Maldevta to assess the damage firsthand. In Maldevta, a 100-meter stretch of road vanished under raging waters from the Sahastradhara floods. Talking to reporters, Dhami said, "Houses, government buildings, and livelihoods took a big hit. Roads are cut off, river levels are rising, but our teams are working round the clock to fix things." He revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah called him that morning, promising full central support.
Dhami also posted on X, assuring people he’s monitoring the situation closely with local officials. Uttarakhand Police urged everyone to stay indoors, avoid travel, and seek safe spots amid the chaos.
The torrential rains made the Sahastradhara river overflow, sweeping debris into Dehradun’s main market. Shops and hotels suffered major damage as the floodwaters hit hard. Across the state, roads, homes, and infrastructure faced widespread destruction from the relentless downpour.
As recovery efforts continue, authorities focus on helping affected families and restoring normalcy in flood-hit Dehradun. Stay tuned for updates on Uttarakhand rain disaster relief.
