Fans in Assam are pouring out their hearts over the sudden death of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the “King of Humming.” The cultural icon and filmmaker lost his life in a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore on September 19, leaving millions of admirers in shock and grief.
In Guwahati, emotional crowds gathered to light candles and share memories of Garg, whose soulful tunes like “Ya Ali” touched generations. “He’s more than a singer—he’s our pride,” one fan said, capturing the widespread sorrow across the state.
Garg’s body arrived in India earlier today, landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita were among the first to pay their respects there, honoring the star who brought Assam’s music to the world stage.
The remains, cleared after a post-mortem, will soon fly to Guwahati on a special flight. Once in the city, they’ll head straight to his family home for a private farewell. “We ask everyone to give the family some quiet time—these are their last moments together,” the chief minister told reporters.
From there, the public can say goodbye at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, also known as Sarusajai Stadium. The Assam government has set up viewing hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 21. A government statement called Garg a “larger-than-life artist” and urged fans to join in a dignified tribute to “Assam’s beloved son.”
A cabinet meeting later today will decide on the cremation spot. In the meantime, the state has declared three days of mourning—no official events, celebrations, or entertainment until it’s over, the Chief Minister’s Office announced.
Condolences keep flooding in from across India, while hundreds of fans already crowd outside Garg’s Guwahati home, hoping for one last glimpse of their hero. His legacy as a humming maestro and storyteller lives on, even as Assam bids a tearful goodbye.
