In Hyderabad, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K.T. Rama Rao slammed the Congress government in Telangana on Wednesday, saying farmer suicides have spiked again under their watch. He pointed to more than 700 farmers who took their lives in the last two years, a sharp rise from the progress made before.
KTR, the BRS working president and former minister, highlighted how things changed under previous Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, known as KCR. During KCR’s time in office, farmer suicides in Telangana dropped by a record 96%, the biggest decline anywhere in India, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. “We brought in a golden era for farmers,” KTR told reporters, crediting schemes like Rythu Bandhu for direct income support and Rythu Bima for insurance coverage. These, along with major irrigation projects and round-the-clock free power for farming, gave Telangana’s farmers real security and confidence.
KTR shared stark numbers from NCRB reports to back his point. In 2014, Telangana saw 1,347 farmer suicides, making up 10.9% of the national total. By 2023, at the end of KCR’s decade-long rule, that number plunged to just 56 cases—a 95.84% drop—and Telangana’s share fell to only 0.51% nationwide. But now, under two years of Congress rule, over 700 tragic deaths have happened. “This shows Congress’s inefficiency and lack of care for people,” KTR said.
He explained that these farmer support programs transformed lives in Telangana, and other states should take notes. In neighboring Maharashtra, run by the BJP, farmer suicides remain high. “If Telangana could turn things around, why not Maharashtra or others? No farmer should die without proper help,” KTR urged.
Looking ahead, KTR called for KCR’s return as chief minister to keep welfare policies alive and ensure farmers live with dignity. His comments come amid ongoing debates about farmer welfare in Telangana and across India.
