In Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, a political spat erupted after police filed an FIR against several students and residents of Government College Darlaghat. The case stems from a video that went viral on social media. In the clip, a group of people can be heard shouting, “Sukhu ne bulaya hai, bhukhe hi tarpa gaya hai” – translating to “Sukhu called us, but he left us hungry.” The chant was captured during lunch arrangements at a state function where Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was inaugurating new animal‑herd schemes.

Police responded quickly. Superintendent of Police (SP) Solan Gaurav Singh said the incident led to a charge sheet being lodged. An FIR was filed at Darlaghat Police Station on October 4th, 2:00 PM, under Sections 353(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections target false statements that spark hatred among groups. The complaint, lodged by local resident Basant Lal, claimed that several young women raised slogans aimed at stirring regional resentment against the CM.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blasted the move as a misuse of police power to silence dissent. At a press conference in Mandi, former Chief Minister and opposition leader Jai Ram Thakur accused the Sukhu government of frequently filing FIRs against anyone who criticizes its failures. He said even students were targeted, and described the action as a political vendetta. BJP MLA Trilok Jamwal added that the episode revealed an authoritarian atmosphere that stifles even small protests.

Congress lawmakers defended the police. Sanjay Awasthy, an MLA from Arki, said the officials were simply upholding law and order. He denied that food was withheld from attendees, insisting the students had trespassed into the community lunch area. According to him, the students were not invited to the event and caused a disturbance.

The incident has sparked heated exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition. Both sides blame each other for politicising the event, and the controversy has drawn attention to how government actions are handled during public ceremonies in Himachal Pradesh. The situation remains under police investigation, while the political showdown continues to unfold.
