The Supreme Court in New Delhi has lifted a long‑standing ban on fireworks in the capital’s circle, allowing low‑emission “green” crackers to be sold and used from October 18 to 21 for the upcoming Deepavali. The decision comes after years of strict restrictions that stretched a city from pollution concerns.
The court said that green fireworks make little difference to Delhi NCR’s air quality, and therefore can be used for a short festive stretch under tight rules. For the makers and traders in Sivakasi—India’s core fireworks hub that produces about 90 % of the country’s pyrotechnics—this ruling feels like a big morale boost.
“T‑Kannan, the TIFMA secretary, welcomed the judgment, saying it confirms that fireworks do not drive the city’s pollution.” He added that seeing green crackers fly again will strengthen confidence among traders and could help revive jobs and the industry in the region.
Similarly, P. Ganesan, president of TANFAMA, called the decision “the most joyous moment” for fireworks manufacturers. “A surge in demand in the NCR will unlock new jobs for countless workers,” he said. He noted that the timing is tight; most Deepavali orders were already set, so the immediate boost will be modest.
A. Asaithambi of SIFMA said the verdict is a “step forward” after a long legal battle and that the true impact will show next year, once licensing and distribution get up to speed. He also highlighted how the Supreme Court’s acknowledgement of eco‑friendly green crackers spots the industry’s innovation trajectory.
For Sivakasi and Delhi’s NCR, the verdict signals that the fireworks market can once more rebound. The industry is eager to display brighter, cleaner celebrations while promising fresh employment prospects across the nation.
