A train loaded with Maruti Suzuki cars has just arrived in Kashmir, marking a big step forward for the region’s rail links. The first automobile rake from Delhi Division’s Northern Railway left the company’s in-plant Gati Shakti Terminal in Manesar on October 1. It carried more than 116 vehicles, including popular models like the Brezza, Dzire, WagonR, and S-Presso, and traveled 850 kilometers to reach Anantnag Goods Shed in the Kashmir Valley on October 3.
Along the way, the train crossed the world’s highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River—a stunning engineering feat. This journey highlights the new Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which connects the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India by rail. The USBRL boosts regional connectivity, speeds up logistics, and cuts down on road traffic jams that have long plagued the area.
Since the USBRL opened, Indian Railways has ramped up goods transport to and from the Kashmir Valley. Up to September 30, they’ve moved 12,400.9 tonnes of apples, 48,387 tonnes of cement, 1,341 tonnes of plastic goods, and 716.1 tonnes of steel. These numbers show how rail is transforming trade in the region.
This auto train delivery is part of Indian Railways’ push to give Kashmir reliable connectivity. It opens doors for better industrial and commercial logistics, cuts reliance on bumpy roads, and streamlines supply chains. In the end, it promises to raise living standards and fuel economic growth for Kashmir’s people.
