A car plunged into a deep gorge on the Delhi‑Mumbai Expressway, killing five people in the early hours on Friday. The crash happened just before 7.30 a.m. near the Mahi River bridge, close to Bhetia‑Bhimpura village in Ratlam district, Madhya Pradesh.
Police say the sedan – registered in Maharashtra as MH03 EL 1388 – smashed through the roadside railing and fell into the ravine below. The victims included a 15‑year‑old boy and a 70‑year‑old man, and most were from Gujarat and Mumbai. The police now are working on identifying the deceased and confirming their addresses.
Surendra Singh Gadariya, the station house‑officer (SHO) of Rawati police, told reporters that locals heard a loud crash as the car lost control on the elevated section of the expressway. Rescue teams, including local police and fire services, arrived quickly but all passengers were dead on arrival. The bodies were recovered from the wreckage and will be taken to Ratlam Medical College for post‑mortems while authorities verify the victims’ identities.
The preliminary investigation points to a possible high‑speed drive or a brief lapse in the driver’s attention. Fog or mechanical failure have not been ruled out. Police have called for faster action and have registered a case for rash driving and causing death by negligence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. No survivors emerged from the accident, and the traffic on the expressway was diverted for over three hours, as cranes cleared the debris.
Officials urge drivers to stick to posted speed limits, especially in the early morning when visibility can be low. The Delhi‑Mumbai Expressway has seen a number of incidents since it opened, and authorities are considering stronger safety barriers in vulnerable sections. A joint notification will be sent to families in Maharashtra and Gujarat, and investigators will further confirm the victims’ details while coordinating with state agencies.
