Two young men suspected of attempting to plant a bomb in Delhi were taken to police custody for three days on Friday, a city court ruled. The arrests came after Delhi Police stopped a planned terror attack that could have harmed thousands in the capital.
The suspects, 19‑year‑old Md. Adnan Khan (Nikki Nagar, Delhi) and 20‑year‑old Adnan Khan (Karond, Bhopal), were detained on Oct. 16 and Oct. 18, respectively. Both were held in detention under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act while investigators sifted through mobile phones, pen drives and laptops seized from them.
Delhi Police asked the court to extend their custody for four more days, but the Patiala House court approved only a three‑day extension until Oct. 27. The police want to interrogate the men about the social‑media data recovered from their devices and to cross‑check the content with the seized tech.
According to police, the young men had contacts with a Syria‑based IS handler, Abu Ibrahim al‑Qureshi. They reportedly spread extremist videos online, tried to recruit new followers and coordinated the plot to target crowded places during the upcoming festive season.
Investigators found a hard disk with a video of Md. Adnan taking a “Bay’ah” pledging allegiance to the IS Caliph Abu Hafs al‑Hashimi al‑Qurayshi, recorded while he wore IS black clothing and a scarf. Other seized items included an IS flag, a timer, instructions for making plastic bombs, Molotov cocktails, and a list of remote detonation methods.
The Bhopal suspect had earlier been arrested under the UPA ATS for threatening a judge over a Gyanvapi survey. After obtaining bail in 2024, he resurfaced to continue online terrorist propaganda and recruitment.
Delhi Police said the matter remains under active investigation. They plan to press charges once the lab analysis of the gadgets is complete, and will keep courts posted on any new evidence.
