Experts at the RMC predict a low-pressure system will brew over the central Bay of Bengal today, sparked by a cyclonic circulation in the northern Andaman Sea. This system could head west-northwest and strengthen into a marked low-pressure area by Thursday, October 2, near the central and northwest Bay of Bengal.
From there, it may track toward the coasts of southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh, potentially making landfall around Friday, October 3. Keep an eye on Bay of Bengal weather updates as this develops.
In Chennai, look for partly cloudy skies all day, with chances of light to moderate rain, thunder, and lightning in some neighborhoods. Temperatures will peak at 34 to 35 degrees Celsius and dip to 26 to 27 degrees at night—typical for the season but watch for those sudden downpours.
Heavy rain warnings target specific districts too. On October 2, expect intense showers in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Tiruvannamalai. By October 3, the alert widens to include Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, and Puducherry alongside the earlier areas.
The weather team has a strong message for fishermen: Stay out of the sea. Rough waves are forecast in south and north Tamil Nadu coastal waters, the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, central and northern Bay of Bengal, and areas off Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and the Andaman Sea. Even parts of the northeast and east-central Arabian Sea could turn hazardous.
