In a bold move, former Kerala police chief Jacob Thomas has swapped his police uniform for the khaki of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The 65-year-old retired Director General of Police (DGP) joined the RSS as a full-time pracharak on Wednesday during a route march in Ernakulam district’s Pallikkara area.
Thomas showed up in the group’s traditional Ganavesham outfit, marking his official entry into the organization. He shared that his ties to the RSS go back decades, including close connections with its leader, sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat. What drew him in? The RSS’s strong discipline and the volunteers’ selfless dedication to the nation—something Thomas says sets it apart from any other group worldwide.
Thomas had already hinted at this step, saying he wanted to dedicate himself fully as a pracharak and let the RSS decide his role. This comes after a dramatic career shift in Kerala politics.
Once a key ally of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Thomas took charge as Director of Vigilance right when Vijayan started his term in 2016. But things turned sour by 2018. He faced two suspensions, got reinstated, and then ended up leading the struggling Kerala State Metal Industries Ltd in Shoranur—a far cry from his top police job.
On the night before retiring on May 31, 2020, Thomas made waves by sleeping on his office floor as a protest gesture. After hanging up his badge, he jumped into politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the 2021 Kerala assembly elections, he ran for the Irinjalakuda seat and pulled in about 33,000 votes, landing third. The winner, R. Bindu from the CPI(M), later became Kerala’s Higher Education Minister.
Now, Thomas’s journey from enforcing law in Kerala Police khaki to promoting RSS ideals in their signature uniform signals a new chapter in his life.
