Unseasonal rain and high‑speed winds have battered paddy crops in Madhya Pradesh, leaving farmers scrambling for help. The heavy rains, which have been falling for more than a week, have ruined crops that were almost ready for harvest across several districts.
The Gwalior‑Chambal area, already hit hard by a monsoon flood a few months ago, is the worst affected. Districts like Morena, Datia and Sheopur show large crop losses. Farmers say the sudden weather has cost them thousands of rupees and threatens their livelihoods.
Former Home Minister Narottam Mishra, who is on a political tour in Bihar, flew back to his hometown of Datia to see the damage firsthand. He promised that the state will compensate farmers for the lost harvests. “The rain has destroyed paddy here, and we will meet the Chief Minister to push for quick support,” Mishra told reporters. He ordered local revenue officials to start a survey of the affected lands.
Bharatiya Kisan Sangh president Kamal Singh Anjana said the damage extends beyond Datia. Crop losses have been recorded in Rewa, Jabalpur, Narmadapuram, Mandla, Dindori, Hoshangabad, Harda, Betul and Sehore, with estimated losses hitting Rs 5,000 crore for kharif crops like paddy and maize. “If the rain continues for a few more days, the damage could rise even higher,” Anjana warned. Farmers are spreading tarpaulin sheets over their fields, but many crops are already lost.
Tragedy also loomed when a farmer, Kailash Meena, who had cultivated paddy on about nine bighas of land, reportedly took his own life after the heavy rains flooded his fields. The flood turned the crop to mush and wiped out his investment in seeds, fertilizer and labor.
The India Meteorological Department attributes the persistent downpours to a depression over the Arabian Sea, a trough line cutting through Madhya Pradesh, and an active cyclonic circulation in the north. Together with Cyclone Montha, these systems have forced continuous heavy rainfall across the state. The state government is now racing to assess the damage and arrange financial relief for the affected farmers.
