Former West Bengal MLA Sital Kumar Sardar, 83, died on Wednesday night from age‑related illnesses, his family announced. He had lived at his home in Howrah district’s Sankrail constituency for many years before his passing.

Sardar’s family said his body will be brought to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly today, where colleagues will give his final respects. The Assembly’s Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, also expressed his condolences on social media, calling the veteran leader a “veteran of the people.” Adhikari wrote, “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of former MLA of Sankrail, Hon’ble Shri Sheetal Sardar. My thoughts are with his family and supporters. Om शांति.”

Sardar was a five‑time elected representative from Sankrail. He first won the seat as a Congress candidate, then joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and secured four consecutive terms under that banner. The 2021 election saw the TMC refuse to field any candidate aged 80 or over, and the BJP also did not give him a ticket, instead making him a member of its state committee. He stepped back from active politics after that and later re‑joined the Trinamool Congress a few years ago, but never returned to the spotlight.

The former MLA had a long‑standing presence in West Bengal politics, teaching his peers that dedication and service could run across party lines. He studied at Shibpur Dinabandhu Institution, earning his Class 12 in 1961, and had also completed schooling at New Andul High School in 1959.

His son, community members, and former colleagues remember Sital Kumar Sardar as a stalwart of the Sankrail constituency and a respected elder in West Bengal’s political history. The state will mark his life with a moment of silence this week, honoring a veteran who once shaped the political landscape of Howrah district.
