In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, police from the state’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) nabbed four terror suspects on Monday. Officials say these men plotted to build a “Mujahideen Army” and swap India’s democracy for Sharia law through violent attacks.
The ATS got a tip about people in different Uttar Pradesh districts, swayed by radical groups from Pakistan. These suspects aimed to topple the government with armed jihad. They met up in secret spots, joined social media chats, and shared videos and audio to stir up trouble. They even raised money to buy weapons and gear for terror strikes. Police also uncovered plans to target and kill non-Muslim religious leaders soon.
The squad filed a case under sections 148 and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at their Lucknow station. The arrested men are Akmal Raza from Sultanpur, Safeel Salmani (also known as Ali Razvi) from Robertsganj in Sonbhadra, Mohd. Tausif from Ghatampur in Kanpur, and Qasim Ali from Sarai Qadeem in Rampur.
During early questioning, the suspects admitted they wanted to launch jihad against non-believers to fight what they called oppression of Muslims and enforce Sharia law across India. They radicalized others with similar views, spread violent jihadist writings, and built their own extremist network to carry out killings and chaos.
Uttar Pradesh police plan to bring the men to court soon and ask for custody time to dig deeper into their helpers and bigger network. In the raid, officers seized five mobile phones, Aadhaar and PAN cards, ATM and credit cards, plus a PhonePe scanner from the group.
