From PM-JAY to Amrutam Yojana: Gujarat strengthens healthcare access

For over 24 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made healthcare a top priority in his push for people’s welfare across India. One key program, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), gives millions of families free medical treatment worth up to Rs 5 lakh per year. In Gujarat, state leaders took it further with the Mukhyamantri Amrutam Yojana, boosting coverage to Rs 10 lakh for even better protection.

Take the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad—patients there now get state-of-the-art care, including robotic heart surgeries that cut risks and speed up recovery. Dr. Chirag Doshi, the institute’s director, points out how Gujarat amps up PM-JAY’s Rs 5 lakh limit to Rs 10 lakh, helping more people afford top treatments.

In Gandhinagar, a shiny new Ayurvedic Hospital lets folks use their Ayushman card for free Ayurveda and homeopathy sessions. Patient Ajay Chaudhary loves it: “Allopathic medicines cost a fortune, but here natural therapies and herbal options come at no charge.” Doctor Mahesh B. Parmar agrees, adding, “Private docs charge big fees for consultations and pills, but everything’s free here.”

Down in Rajkot, AIIMS Rajkot is becoming a go-to spot for advanced healthcare in the Saurashtra region, so patients don’t have to trek to big cities anymore. The hospital rolls out PM-JAY alongside Ayushman Bharat and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra for affordable generic drugs. They’ve even set up two lakh Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA IDs) to make accessing care smoother. Lt. Col. Ankur Pratap Singh, the deputy director, says these steps ensure seamless treatment for everyone.

Families are already feeling the difference. Sneha Hiren Rathore, visiting a relative at AIIMS Rajkot, shares, “The doctors are excellent, and we get full support right here—no need to go anywhere else.”

From high-tech robotic surgeries to traditional Ayurveda, plus digital IDs and bigger financial safety nets, Gujarat is crafting a healthcare system that’s inclusive, easy to reach, and ready for the future.
