Tragic Truck Accident Mars Ganesh Visarjan in Karnataka’s Hassan: 9 Dead, 20 Injured
In a heartbreaking turn during a festive Ganesh Visarjan procession in Karnataka’s Hassan district, a goods-laden truck plowed into the crowd, pushing the death toll to nine. The accident happened on Friday evening, leaving the community in shock as celebrations turned into chaos.
Twenty people suffered injuries in the Hassan truck accident and are now receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Three of the injured face critical conditions and have been moved to the ICU for close monitoring. To handle the rush, authorities quickly set up a new ward where doctors check on patients every 30 minutes. The quick response shows how seriously the local teams are taking the Ganesh Visarjan tragedy.
South IGP M.B. Boralingaiah pointed straight to the truck driver’s negligence as the main cause of this devastating incident. The crash unfolded on National Highway 373, along the busy stretch between Hassan and Mysuru, right around 8 p.m. Early reports say the driver was heading from Hassan towards Holenarasipura when things went wrong.
Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene: the truck first smashed into barricades before running over the procession crowd. The driver himself got hurt in the chaos and is recovering at a private hospital. Police have already started legal action against him for his role in the accident.
Among the victims, the stories hit hard. The deceased include Praveen, a final-year engineering student from Ballari; two 17-year-olds, Rajesh from K.B. Palya near Halekote in Holenarasipura and Eshwar from Danayakanahalli Koppalu; 17-year-old Gokul from Muttigehirehalli; 25-year-old Kumara from Kabbinahalli; another 25-year-old Praveen; 23-year-old Mithun from Gangapura village in Chitradurga district; 19-year-old Suresh from Manenahalli in Chikkamagaluru district; and 55-year-old Prabhakar from Bantarahalli in Hassan.
Mithun’s story stands out – he had just celebrated his birthday that day and joined the Ganesh Visarjan procession with friends right after. A final-year student, he was only three months away from finishing his course. Out of the nine who lost their lives, six were locals from Hassan, while three were students from Ballari, Chikkamagaluru, and Chitradurga.
Hassan SP Mohammad Sujitha shared more details, confirming the driver lost control during the evening drive. IGP Boralingaiah echoed this, stressing that the driver’s carelessness led to the tragedy on NH 373.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stepped in with strong support for the families affected by the Ganesh Visarjan accident. He expressed deep condolences and announced immediate help: "The government will give Rs 5 lakh compensation to each family of the deceased. We’ll also cover all medical expenses for the injured."
As Hassan mourns this avoidable loss during the Ganesh festival, officials urge everyone to stay safe on roads, especially during crowded processions. The investigation continues, but the focus remains on supporting the victims and preventing future mishaps.
