In a lively meeting in Aizawl on Sunday, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar praised Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma for his strong support of the state’s judiciary. The chief justice, who was visiting Mizoram, highlighted the progress the government has made in improving court facilities and building a better judicial system.
CMO officials said the two leaders thanked each other for their visits. Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed gratitude for Justice Kumar’s trip and impressed the chief justice on the strides taken to upgrade judicial infrastructure. He also talked about the ongoing creation of the Mizoram State Human Rights Commission and other key initiatives that will strengthen legal safeguards in the state.
Justice Kumar applauded the state government’s commitment, noting the “significant achievements” in lifting the judiciary’s standards. The meeting also featured Judge Michael Zothankhuma from the Gauhati High Court.
The Gauhati High Court has historically served a broad region. Until March 2013, it was the single high court for seven Northeast Indian states (excluding Sikkim). Separate high courts opened that month in Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura. Today, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh still host temporary benches of the Gauhati High Court in their capitals.
Recent upgrades include the new permanent bench in Itanagar, opened by former Chief Justice B.R. Gavai in August, and the Aizawl bench’s fresh building, inaugurated in September 2023 by former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.
This partnership between the state government and the judges marks a clear commitment to making justice faster, easier, and more accessible for all Mizoram residents.
