India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Shivshankar Mayekar in a major land scam rocking Goa’s prime properties. The Panaji Zonal Office nabbed him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on October 1. The next day, a special court in Mapusa gave investigators nine days to question him, until October 10.
This bust ties back to a fraud case that started with a Goa Police FIR against Yeshwant Sawant and others. They allegedly used fake documents to grab land from the Communidade of Anjuna—a key plot at Survey No. 496/1-A in Anjuna. The group then sold off chunks of this valuable real estate to outsiders, raking in huge illegal profits that triggered the ED’s money laundering probe.
At the heart of it all is Mayekar, whom investigators call a key player in the Goa land scam. He reportedly snapped up multiple plots across the state by putting them in the names of friends and family. Mayekar sold parts of these properties and funneled the cash through dummy accounts before slipping it back into his own pockets—a classic move to hide dirty money.
Back on September 9, ED raids uncovered piles of evidence showing Mayekar’s network grabbed lands worth lakhs of square meters in hot tourist spots like Anjuna and Assagao in Bardez taluka. Officials peg the total value of these illegally seized Goa properties at over Rs 1,200 crore, marking one of the biggest land frauds exposed in the state lately.
Mayekar stands as a top conspirator who pocketed a big share of the proceeds. His questioning could unravel more about shady benami deals, other helpers in the ring, and where all that laundered cash ended up. As the ED digs deeper into this Anjuna land fraud, eyes are on how it might expose wider issues in Goa’s booming real estate scene.
