Union Home Minister Amit Shah kicked off the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad on Sunday, highlighting the government’s big dream to turn India into a global leader in every sector by 2047. The event took place in Naranpura, and Shah called this the largest sports complex in India and one of the most advanced worldwide.

“This place will fire up our athletes to aim high and grab medals on the international stage,” Shah said during the inauguration. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for revolutionizing sports in India, adding that Modi’s plans ensure top-notch training and fair selection processes for players. “Sports might have started elsewhere in the world, but we’ll make sure India leads the pack by 2047,” Shah declared.

Shah shared a fun backstory on how the idea sparked. He told Modi about 21 acres of unused land and suggested building a sports hub there. Modi replied, “Go ahead, but make it world-class!” And that’s exactly what happened. The complex honors freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, whom Shah remembered with deep respect. “Savarkar leaped into the sea from a ship near France while in chains— the British recaptured him and gave him two life sentences in one lifetime. Athletes training here will draw inspiration from his grit to win big.”

Packed with cutting-edge features, the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex offers modern infrastructure, medical support for players and coaches, and even slow-motion video tech to analyze games. It’s a fully green project, built together by the Government of India and Gujarat government.

Shah spotlighted Gujarat’s rising star in Indian sports, saying Ahmedabad is set to become the country’s sports capital. He mentioned the upcoming Sardar Patel Sports Complex right next to Namo Stadium. Under the BJP government led by Modi, sports funding has skyrocketed—from Rs 1,643 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 5,300 crore now.

The minister also celebrated India’s Olympic success. “From independence until 2014, we won just 20 Olympic medals. In the last eight years, we’ve bagged 15 more!” he noted, crediting the push for better infrastructure and talent development.

Earlier that day, at the 5th Rajbhasha Sammelan in Gandhinagar for Hindi Diwas, Shah urged everyone to view Hindi as a supportive friend to all Indian languages, not a rival. “Hindi strengthens our regional tongues—there’s no clash between them,” he emphasized.
