In the holy city of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, devotees worshipped Govardhan Puja with vibrant tradition and deep devotion on Tuesday. The day’s main ceremony was held at the famous Dwarkadhish Temple, where thousands gathered from dawn to participate in the rituals.
Govardhan Puja is especially important in Mathura, the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. The festival celebrates the day he lifted the Govardhan mountain on his little finger, protecting the people of Braj from the wrath of Indra, the rain god. The story is told each year as a reminder that faith and gratitude keep us safe in the face of nature’s forces.
The holiday falls just one day after Diwali and is sometimes called Annakut, meaning “a mountain of food.” Devotees worship the Govardhan hill and present ‘Chappan Bhog’ – 56 kinds of vegetarian dishes and sweets – to express thanks and love for Krishna.
During the celebrations, devotees build a miniature Govardhan using cow dung, light lamps, and offer flowers, diyas, and food at the temple. The event illustrates the strong bond between gods and followers and reminds people of the Earth’s generosity.
The legend goes that young Krishna told his mother Yashoda that the villagers should worship the Govardhan hill instead of Indra, who was seen as the rain maker. When Indra was angered, he sent seven days of relentless rain. Desperate, villagers sought Krishna’s help, and he lifted the entire mountain, sheltering everyone—human and animal. After the storm, Indra recognized the boy’s divine power and bowed to him.
Today, Govardhan Parvat is a major pilgrimage spot for Krishna devotees. On Annakut, thousands circle the 11‑mile trail around the hill, offering flowers, lights, and food at every shrine.
Govardhan Puja in Mathura remains a powerful reminder of nature’s blessings, humility, and the protective love that devotion brings.
