Mumbai, Oct 10 – Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Friday that Maharashtra’s OBC reservation policy will stay intact, even after the state government approved a September 2 resolution to issue Kunbi certificates to the Maratha community.
Bawankule, who chairs the cabinet sub‑committee on OBC issues, spoke to a group of OBC leaders who had rallied for the cancellation of the resolution. “The government, along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the deputy chief ministers, has assured our delegation that OBC reservations will not be affected,” he told them.
The minister added that the government is committed to safeguarding OBC rights. He warned against the spread of fake Kunbi certificates and promised that only eligible Marathas will receive them. “We will clear any confusion with the help of Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar,” he said, stressing that the committee chair and the government will oversee the process.
Bawankule also spoke about a march by Shiv Sena UBT in Marathwada over Saturday. He cautioned the demonstrators against ignoring the region’s development needs, comparing them to “Nizams” who once left Marathwada behind. “Our MahaYuti coalition isn’t just changing names; it is actively bringing Marathwada into the development spotlight and raising living standards for ordinary people,” Bawankule said.
He highlighted the name change of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as a historic shift and claimed that the opposition had “kept this area away from development.” He reiterated that the government had guaranteed five free bags of sand for every one of the 30 lakh houses approved under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
When asked about recent floods that damaged farms and hurt farmers, Bawankule said the government was on alert to enforce the relief package announced earlier in the week. “We are touring the state to ensure the relief reaches every affected farmer,” he told reporters. “If anyone has been left out of the Panchnama, we will add them.”
The minister’s remarks come as Maharashtra heads into a busy election season, with parties promising reforms for OBCs, Marathas, and the rural hinterland. The government’s pledge to protect OBC reservations amid the new Kunbi certificate policy is being watched closely by all stakeholders.
