Congress leader Udit Raj has slammed the NDA government over the recent unrest in Ladakh, calling Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s push for full statehood a smart and urgent move. He blasted the central government’s response to the violence there, along with the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, saying it shows how out of touch leaders in Delhi really are.
In a fiery statement, Raj pointed to the tough times in Ladakh since it became a Union Territory. “This is exactly what we need right now,” he said. “Unemployment wasn’t this bad before the change. Now it’s skyrocketed, and that’s fueling the anger. Arresting Sonam Wangchuk hurts the whole country. The central government just doesn’t get how delicate this region is.”
Raj made it clear Wangchuk had nothing to do with the violence. The activist has poured his heart into building up Ladakh, he noted. “Because of the government’s blunders, we could lose this part of India,” Raj warned. “We’ve already handed over nearly 4,000 square kilometers to China. These folks can’t run the country—they just give speeches. If this keeps up, the nation might fall apart.”
His comments come after a deadly protest in Leh on September 24, where four people lost their lives and more than 90 others got hurt. Demonstrators have been fighting for years to give Ladakh full statehood and protections under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which would safeguard local rights and land.
Just days later, on Friday, authorities detained Wangchuk under the tough National Security Act (NSA), sparking even more outrage.
Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah visited Ganderbal on Monday and had a stern message for the Centre: Don’t push the people of Jammu and Kashmir too far. “Statehood is a fundamental right under the Constitution for folks in J&K,” he said. “We can’t let this area slide into the chaos we’re seeing in Ladakh.”
Abdullah’s words highlight the rising demands to bring back full statehood to both Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. The regions lost that status in August 2019 when India scrapped Article 370, splitting the old state into two Union Territories under direct central control.
On a lighter note, as Navratri kicks off, Udit Raj shared warm wishes with the nation. “Happy Navratri to everyone!” he posted. “Celebrate with joy—Vijayadashami is coming up soon. Best wishes all around. May India grow stronger, the economy boom, and prosperity reach every home.”
